Read in AOPA Pilot magazine about the new Aspen Avionics moving map, that goes into the Vertical Speed Indicator slot. It's supposed to be compatible with text-only GPS systems. Went to the Aspen Avionics web site (www.aspenavionics.com), and unfortunately, in their Q and A, they say:
Q: What GPS systems are you compatible with?
A: The AT300 is compatible with virtually every panel mounted aviation GPS receiver in use today, including most legacy panel mount navigators (except Northstar). Contact us at support@aspenavionics.com if you would like to know if we are compatible with your GPS system.
Oh well. |

| They probably meant that it was compatible with any GPS or LORAN that supports the NMEA 0183 standard. Unfortunately, Northstar does not. They have their own proprietary data stream. They are more than willing to send you a copy of the protocol and it is fairly easy to convert it to NMEA 0183, so if you are on a PC, you could write a program to input the Northstar signal on one serial port and output NMEA on another serial port. |
